September, 2003: Journal illustrations to be created for St. Elizabeth's Medical Center
Fairman Studios has recently been asked to create original illustration in continuous tone for an
article on sternoclavicular joint septic arthritis. This rare infection is fairly common in intravenous drug
users, for two possible reasons: 1) they may inject drugs between the two
heads of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, superior to the joint; or 2) when drugs are injected into arm veins,
the valves of the subclavian vein at its junction with the internal jugular may become seeded
with bacteria. From the valves of the subclavian, infection may propagate
through the vessel wall into the SC joint, which is immediately anterior. These concepts will be illustrated
for a journal article that will be completed in the fall.

July 24, 2003: Certificate of Merit Awarded
At the 58th Annual Conference of the Association of
Medical Illustrators, held in New Orleans, LA, a
Certificate of Merit was awarded to Fairman Studios in the Professional Marketing and Promotional category for Kyphon's
Balloons for Bones ad campaign Lenticular card.
The main objective of this lenticular card is to illustrate how the KyphX Inflatable Bone Tamp
(a balloon stent for osteoporotic bone) restores spinal alignment through a simple, yet dynamic
animated illustration. This is accomplished by creating, registering, compositing and interlacing five still images.
The card is intended to illustrate for the viewer how the bone tamp elevates the end-plates of the compressed vertebral body.
This alignment is achieved by the careful insertion and inflation of the bone tamp within the vertebral body.
The bone tamp is threaded through a cannula that has been placed through the pedicle of the crushed vertebra and into the
posterior edge of the vertebral body's interior.
The style of artwork also illustrates Kyphon's marketing image - that of an architectural blue print - since the company's main goal
is to "transform and restore the architecture of the bone". Lateral views are chosen as the clearest way to show this change in
the bone's architecture. This lenticular card is distributed to attendees at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons
Annual Meeting and other similar trade shows.

Exhibitor Magazine features Kyphon's Balloons for Bones ad campaign in an article called
Ideas that work, Ammo for Your Idea Arsenal. The article
features award-winning and innovative marketing ideas for
companies who want to spread the word on their products: The article covers how Kyphon International wanted the attendees of
the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons Annual Meeting to see a demo of their KyphX Inflatable Bone Tamp before
the show even started. Instead of sending a sales rep to visit each attendee's office, they sent the demo through the mail.
They used a lenticular hologram, a ridged plastic image, illustrated by Fairman Studios, that shows successive images when one
tilts it ‹ much like an old favorite: the Cracker Jacks' prize. The mailer shows how a surgeon could insert the bone tamp
into a compressed vertebra, inflate the instrument, and restore the vertebra to its original shape.

April 2003: Percardia receives new Cardiac Anatomy visuals for clinical trials
Fairman Studios is illustrating new heart illustrations to be used by Percardia researchers. Percardia is a medical device company
dedicated to development and commercialization of proprietary devices for treatment of coronary artery disease (CAD).
The company's current core technology establishes blood flow from the left ventricle of the heart to the coronary vasculature.
The company's technology is intended to provide improvement or relief of angina pectoris,
which often results from pre-existing ischemic conditions typically caused by a partial or total blockage of the
vessel that significantly restricts the flow of oxygenated blood to the heart muscle. With new coronary vessel illustrations,
researchers will be able
to visually document clinical trials.

March 2003: Fairman Studios creates poster and
tear sheets for Novartis' Sandostatin® patient education collateral.
Fairman Studios has teamed with Interlink Healthcare to create patient education materials for Novartis
Sandostatin, current drug therapy for acromegaly. Sandostatin LAR® Depot (octreotide acetate for injectable suspension)
is indicated for
long-term maintenance therapy in acromegalic patients for whom medical treatment is appropriate and who have been
shown to respond to and can tolerate Sandostatin® (octreotide acetate) Injection. The goal of treatment in acromegaly
is to reduce GH and IGF-1 levels to normal. Sandostatin LAR® Depot can be used in patients who have had an inadequate
response to surgery or in those for whom surgical resection is not an option. It may also be used in patients who have
received radiation and have had an inadequate therapeutic response.

March 2003: Fairman Studios illustrates one of the newest scientific discoveries:
RNA interference.
Founded on the discovery of RNA interference, Alnylam is developing technology that
can specifically and potently silence disease-causing genes. RNA interference is a natural cellular process that
combats viral infections by degrading the viral genetic message before it can produce a protein. By adapting this
process for therapeutic applications, any pathological gene can be "silenced" without interfering with the gene
itself. Thus, RNA interference represents a powerful platform of therapeutics that can treat a diverse range of human diseases. A primer
with didactic molecular illustration will be published this year to explain this newest and exciting biotechnological discovery.
This project comes at a great time of the year: April 25, 2003 will be the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of DNA!

February 2003: Ichthyological illustrations created for OnEarth Magazine.
Ben Raines, Deep trouble: in the Gulf of Mexico, it's best to let the big ones get away.
OnEarth Magazine, NRDC. March 2003. On July 22, 2001, Alabama's Mobile Register (circulation 100,000) published its first article on
methylmercury contamination in Gulf seafood. The investigative series that ensued, with more than forty articles to date, has shown not
only that methylmercury has entered the human population by way of Gulf fish, but also that federal agencies charged with protecting
people from such contamination have failed to do so. For the series, Ben Raines was awarded the 2002 John B. Cakes Award for Distinguished
Environmental Journalism. The stories that follow are compiled from a few of his original reports.
OnEarth is an independent quarterly magazine of the NRDC, covering
hard-hitting reports on the environmental issues that define our time -- global warming, Big Oil in the Arctic,
the disappearance of wild places -- to short takes on the new, the provocative,
and the just plain weird. Fairman Studios is producing ichthyological illustrations for the quarterly publication's
next issue featuring an article on mercury levels found in fish.

February 2003:
Cover art for Urticaria and Angioedema feature to be published in another issue Women's Health in Clinical Practice
The feature article "Managing Urticaria and Angioedema Effectively"
will be accompanied by original cover art, produced by Fairman Studios. Urticaria is a well-demarcated skin reaction occurring in the
superficial epidermis. The lesions are erythematous, blanchable, and raised; they vary from 1 to 2 mm to a few centimeters in
diameter and usually have serpiginous borders. Intense itchiness of the involved skin is typical.
Angioedema is a swelling of the deeper cutaneous and subcutaneous tissue. Skin histology in acute urticaria
shows mast cell degranulation, dermal edema, dilated blood vessels and lymphatics, and little or no cellular infiltration.
Acute angioedema displays similar changes to the deep dermis and subcutaneous tissues.
Chronic urticCorbel, Georgia, Arial and angioedema lesions exhibit an increase in the perivascular cellular
infiltration in addition to the changes noted for acute cases. T-lymphocytes are present, and
occasionally eosinophils, neutrophils, and an increase in dermal mast cell numbers can be seen.
